What is Intentional Family Living?

In a world filled with distractions, busyness, and competing priorities, raising a family that is deeply rooted in faith requires more than just good intentions. It demands Intentional KINGdom Family Discipleship—a purposeful effort to nurture faith, model Christ-like living, and pass down biblical truths to the next generation.

True discipleship within the family is not just about occasional church attendance or a Bible study here and there. It is a holistic, all-encompassing way of life that shapes every aspect of our existence.

When done with intention, KINGdom discipleship is:

1. Life to Life: Discipleship Begins with Personal Commitment

Discipleship is not a passive activity; it is life to life—a direct investment of ourselves into the spiritual growth of our family. Parents cannot merely delegate spiritual instruction to SONday schools or youth pastors; we must lead by example.

To disciple our families means giving our time, energy, and resources to intentionally guide them in faith. It requires us to live out what we teach, showing our children and loved ones what it means to follow Jesus in the everyday moments of life—how we respond to challenges, how we serve others, and how we prioritize God’s Word.

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV)

2. Life-Transforming: A Change That Begins Within

Intentional family discipleship is not just about knowledge; it is life-transforming. When we commit to discipling our families, the change starts with us.

When parents, grandparents, and mentors grow in their faith and allow the Holy Spirit to transform their hearts, that transformation naturally overflows into their family. Children will see firsthand the power of God’s work in their parents’ lives, making faith real and tangible.

Likewise, as we disciple our families, we witness how God molds and refines them. It is a journey of growth—where brokenness is restored, where character is shaped, and where faith becomes personal.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2 (NIV)

3. A Lifestyle: More Than a Program, It’s a Way of Life

While structured devotionals and church programs can be helpful, true discipleship is a lifestyle. It is not just something we do on SONdays or during special family Bible studies; it is woven into the fabric of daily life.

Discipleship happens in everyday conversations—at the dinner table, during car rides, and in bedtime prayers. It is seen in the way we handle conflicts, how we prioritize God’s Word, and how we encourage our family members in faith.

At first, we may need to intentionally incorporate discipleship into our routines, but over time, it will become second nature. Living in a way that reflects God’s Kingdom will not feel like an extra task but rather the core of who we are.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” – Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NIV)

4. A Lifetime Commitment: Never Giving Up on Our Families

Perhaps the most challenging part of Kingdom family discipleship is that it is a lifetime commitment. There is no graduation day, no final lesson—just a lifelong journey of faith.

It is easy to get discouraged when we don’t see immediate results. Sometimes, our children or family members may struggle, doubt, or even resist faith. But discipleship requires perseverance. We must continue to plant seeds, trusting that in God’s timing, they will bear fruit.

We cannot give up on our families because no one else will love and disciple them like we can. Our responsibility is to keep praying, keep teaching, and keep demonstrating Christ’s love, no matter the season.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

Final Thoughts: Will You Take the Challenge?

Intentional KINGdom Family Discipleship is not easy, but it is one of the most rewarding callings God has given us. It requires us to be fully present and committed—offering our lives, embracing transformation, making faith a lifestyle, and committing for a lifetime.

The question is: Will you take the challenge?

Start today. Invest in the spiritual growth of your family. Be intentional, be faithful, and trust that God will honor your commitment.
